Driving License Requirements for Bali 2026
The driving license situation in Bali can be confusing. Here is everything tourists need to know.
Indonesian law requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) with a motorcycle endorsement to legally ride a scooter in Bali.
How to get an IDP: Apply through your home country automobile association (AAA in the US, AA in the UK, etc.) before traveling. It costs $20-30 and takes a few days.
What happens without an IDP: Police checkpoints are common in tourist areas. The fine for riding without a valid license is Rp 500.000 (about $30 USD).
Important: Your regular car license is NOT sufficient - you need the motorcycle category on your IDP.
Alternative: Some visitors obtain a temporary Indonesian license (SIM) in Denpasar, but this requires a half-day process and a driving test.
